Naga bodies pledge support to peace talks The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL A mass public rally in support of the Indo-Naga peace talks and protest against the Cabinet decision of Manipur was organized at Senapati district headquarter today.

Thousands of protestors took part in the rally jointly organized by United Naga Council, Naga People`s Organisation (NPO) and other Naga bodies. The rally proceeded from Senapati bazar about 11 am and concluded at the same venue after making it till the forest gate.

Later a public meeting was held in the middle of the bazar after blocking the NH-39, during which many while addressing the meeting urged the concerned authority to make an alternative arrangement for the Nagas. However it was not made clear what the alternative arrangement was about when a team of media persons queried. Some of the leaders declined to give any clear point on the mentioned point "alternative arrangement" stating that they will disclose when the time comes.

While addressing the gathering, M. Dili, president NPO, maintained that the Nagas were treated like the Indian Government is treating Pakistan and disclosed that moral and spiritual support will be extended to the Indo-Naga talks scheduled at Kohima and a mass prayer will be offered for positive outcome and final solution to the decade old talk.

He opined that Manipur Government is not the government of Nagas, adding the Nagas will stand on their own unitedly and not rest till a solution is brought about.

Former MP Mani Charenamei, in his speech, claimed that the Nagas had been deprived and suppressed of their social, political and economic rights. The Nagas were kept as if they did not have right for peace, he said adding consequently that the Nagas had been demanding separate administration of their own and asserted the chief minister of Manipur cannot deny the demand. He also opined that the flag of `Nagalim` is the future of the Nagas.

He further asserted an alternative arrangement for the Nagas and besides he also contended that the ADC candidates are powerless with no political powers. ADC election is toxic, he said urging for not supporting the election and opined that supporters will be branded as anti Naga.

The SDSA president also announced a total blockade from midnight today in protest against the non-withdrawal of state forces from Mao gate, denial of entry to NSF volunteers, repeated harassment to the Naga peoples etc. No permit will be granted to any individual or organization during the bandh besides all educational institution and Government offices will be closed and no vehicular movement will be allowed.

During the meeting slogans were chanted by upholding the flag of `Nagalim` which said "Support Indo-Naga peace process", "Down with communal government of Manipur", "Long live Prime Minsiter Manmohan and Th. Muivah", "No rest till solution, no integration no rest", "Killer Ibobi, Terrorist Ibobi", "One Naga one nation", "Expedite Naga peace process" etc.

The UNC president Samson Remei while maintaining the same tone as the other Naga leaders blamed the media, including the PTI, of misinformation and biased reporting.

Kohima: The Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) today held peace talks for the first time in Nagaland where the contentious issue of integration of Naga-inhabited areas, as demanded by the group, was discussed, officials said. On the demand for a single administrative setup of Naga-inhabited areas of the region, the Centre's interlocutor, RS
Pandey, told reporters that the Centre needs a consensus among the states concerned on the issue. A 12-member NSCN(IM) team led by its general secretary, Thuingaleng Muivah, which participated in the three-hour-long talks, acknowledged the difficulties of the Centre in certain areas on the Naga issue.
Muivah said, "Integration is a natural aspiration of the Naga people. We believe the government of India also understands it and hope they will solve this issue in due course of time."
Both sides came to an understanding on some issues, Pandey said. "We hope in due course of time we will be able to hammer out the contentious issues," he said.
Wide-ranging issues based on a set of proposals submitted earlier by the NSCN(IM) to the government of India were discussed at the meeting. Both sides expressed their commitment to explore all possibilities to arrive at a consensus on "certain issues" which are "sensitive in nature", Pandey said, without elaborating.

(Advice to the likes of Ibobi, Biren, Ranjit, O.Joy, Radhabinod and some Meitei friends and Organisations)

My matter-of-factly advice to the above mentioned persons and organisations. It is bad for health and bad for society when you always utter whatever comes to your mouth. It would be good and much better if you think many times before you talk so that you talk sense and show that you have sensibilities. This is what a good and healthy society needs to grow. It is not about June 18th Uprising. It is not about disintegration of Manipur. Not about 2000 years or million years old history. What we witness today is about a Journey of people towards their rightful place in this modern world. It is about a nation in the making, about how leaders and statesmen have shaped histories in different epochs and places in the world. Nations will rise and Nations will fall. Change is a certain thing. It is about what Thuingaleng Muivah, years ago in Shillong once silenced the Rev. Michael Scott who was travelling in the same car, by telling him ‘Do you know how many times the map of Europe have changed?’(Illustrated Weekly of India, 1984) when the latter tauntingly tried to run him down on the idea of Naga Sovereignty. It is about the recognition of the ‘Unique history of the Nagas’ by the mighty Indians. It is about New Delhi and the Nagas trying to find a way towards a political settlement which will be honourable and acceptable to both New Delhi and Nagas.

In your panicked and frenzied mind, you are orchestrating to spew venom at Muivah and the Nagas. You try to slander and denigrate a man whom some have described as one of the greatest ideologues in South East Asia in the present day, a man who was picked and chosen by A Z Phizo to go and hold parleys with the mighty Chinese, a man whose revolutionary ideals have inspired and have been borrowed by many, including the Meiteis, a man whose eminence and prominence have made writers and researchers trek for miles and miles to describe him as very charming and charismatic, a man whose acumen and proficiency in politics have made some of the Indian negotiators comment that he could be a successful Professor in Political Science at even the hallowed halls of Harvard or Oxford, a man described by the press as the epitome of Asia’s longest bush war.

I can only discern that you really do not understand what you utter or shout and try to do. And I do not really know what exactly lies in the bottom of your heart. Some will know but will pretend they do not know. Some may not really know but are used to be their masters’ voice. Some of you, after looting public money, are wilfully and comfortably doing what you are doing because you have the position and power for now but how long will it last.
In panic and in frenzy again, you have unleashed your State’s armed police upon the peace loving Nagas, to shoot, maim and kill. But Nagas have faced and resisted bullets. A thousand or ten thousand may die, but the caravan will move on. You will use or abuse, employ or deploy some stooges and traitors in the Naga family to try to break or destroy us but they will be dealt with differently and in different chapter and methods.

The Nagas are very clear. With the right leadership and with the right decision, the same Lord God who delivered the Israelites from Egypt would also deliver the Nagas.
It is just a matter of time.

The wisdom of the Imphal valley based civil societies, their pretensions and distortion of facts is a sign of their true color for ushering in communal harmony! The very reason for the call of the economic blockade is well known. The effectiveness of the blockade became more evident because of the creation of law enforcers under the direct orders of O. Ibobi’s Cabinet to block the entry of one of Naga’s most prominent leader (given a red carpet welcome even by the GoI at New Delhi) to visit his endeared birth place and meet his peoples to bring about an understanding to usher in peace and peaceful co-existence with their neighbors. Ibobi not only made the economic blockade a complete success, but also blocked the entry and exit of travellers to and from the State of Manipur. The scene at the Nagaland-Manipur border is more than an international border with enemy on the other side. Stationed with armoured vehicles, erection of barricades and hundreds of Manipur’s forces lining up the National Highway 39 in full combat readiness with grenade launchers, 2 inch mortars, machine guns of various capabilities – What is this war and against whom is it being waged ?
The Mao women – went on a peaceful protest march on 6th May 2010 to condemn the brutal assault of Ashihrii Puni of Mao Gate by the Manipuri commandos on the evening of 5th May and also to demand early solution to the vexed Naga issue and usher in peace and prosperity to a deprived, exploited and underserved peoples – the Nagas of the so called Manipur State and also to allow the advocate and idol of hope of the Nagas for peace to visit his birthplace. The Government of Manipur through its law armed forces, without any provocation fired 100 nos of tear gas and mock bombs and also fired countless rounds of assault rifle bullets in the air and some directly at the crowd killing 2 innocent students, injuring 100s of women and men. Following this, a rein of terror, breaking into houses – pulling out men beating, kicking them without reason, ransacking and looting homes, killing livestock – chicken, ducks, dogs and feasting, stealing their little belonging and using their homes as shelter, cooking and eating the food of the threatened and displaced villagers who fled for safety to neighboring villages in Nagaland.
The NSCN (IM) is a recognised organization which has entered into a ceasefire with the Govt. of India and over 70 rounds of peace talks have already taken place and the two entities are working hard to find an amicable solution acceptable to both parties as early as possible. The Govt. of Manipur (GoM) with a Congress led SPF coalition has taken a decision defying the orders of Govt. of India. The people of Imphal valley living in 10% of the geographical area of Manipur has made a hero of the anti-constitutionalist Ibobi. Unfortunately, the GoI is singing to the tune of the defier of its orders and this is taking place in the so called greatest democracy of the world, India.
The Manipur Commandos under the command of Zathang IG (L&O – III) and SSP Kailun, SP Ibomcha seized the small Mao town for about a whole month now. The usually small town buzzling with commercial activities came to an abrupt halt since the 6th May 2010. All farming activities during this peak working season – when the long awaited rains have arrived, has come to a standstill. Schools are shut down, depriving children to pursue education and creating panic amongst innocent children. Mao has become a ghost town. Over 2000 villagers mostly women and children fled from the villages of Song Song, Kayinu, Phikomei, Kalinamei and Rabunamei for fear of extended brutality of the Manipur Commandos. The Manipur Police Commandos’ notoriety for killing innocent people in fake encounters in the Imphal valley and planting small arms and ammunitions and falsely branding them as militants is too well known.
Under cover of CrPC 144 and curfew, the Manipur Police commandoes, MRs and IRBs would sit out in the open even in the middle of the road drinking sekmai ashaba (local liquor – which local taxi drivers were forced to deliver to the police) and meat cooked from stolen livestock, gambling, brandishing their rifles, mocking and calling out names and provoking passersby. When drunk enough, they would shout and pick up fight with each other. Such wild drama carried out without a trace of discipline and control have prompted the few that have stayed back to take care of their homes to leave for fear of shootouts amongst the drunk Commando/IRB/MR personnel that could lead to senseless casualties among the public. They would often intrude beyond the traditional village gates deep into the villages without any respect of the customary practice of the people. Are these the people in whose hands our security and protection has been entrusted ? Is there a command? Is this the discipline of the so called Manipur State Forces? The CRPF jawans could not just look at them with contempt for dehumanizing the uniformed profession. The Mao people indeed have been far too patient!
The Naga civil societies in their large heartedness and desire to peaceably co-exist with neighbors, in the face of death, hurt, losses and humiliation invited the leaders of the Meitei civil societies to meet and reason together. However, the good gestures were turned down blatantly. Now what? The GoM is sending out emissaries in the body of All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO). Does that make sense! Why don’t the civil societies come out? Do they think that snubbing the good gestures of the aggrieved peoples and trying to work out the Guite road will bring about regional harmony?
In the wee hours of 29th May 2010 (around 2.00 am); the Manipur police jawans with their masters secretly left Mao, like the thieves and criminals that they are. Who knows what they have stolen, looted or taken away from the houses, small vendors and shops as booties after the war they waged against the innocent villagers. Or is it for security reason ? Had they been protectors of the people, what have they to fear? Is it the NSCN? No, the NSCN are disciplined cadres and will never raise their guns to break the hard earned peace process! Can it be the public who they so fiercely hated?
Enough is enough! Is there a government – I mean, popular government at all in Manipur? To the Meiteis, the valley (2000sq kms) is Manipur – quote “Peoples of India know only Imphal as Manipur” Dr. Th. Meinya Singh MP in his interview with CNN IBN on the 13th May 2010. Let it be so! Democracy in Manipur is to follow the dictates of the Meiteis. Sorry, even the elected tribal representatives give in to this distorted democracy! The hills become Manipur only to fill the greed of the Meiteis and the elected tribal leaders; who in order to stay in power have to please their Meitei lords. Good for some Naga MLAs – they have responded to the call of the people and resigned.
Look at counter blockades in the Imphal valley against transportation of essential commodities to the hills since 11th May 2010! All systems in Manipur are by design centralized so that every things come to Imphal first before they are sent to the hill districts. Remember, the economic blockade was called since 11th April 2010 to air the grievances of the hill people against the Manipur (Hill Area) District Council Act (Third Amendment) 2008 which destroys the powers of the tribal villages. Today, the various Meitei Civil Societies are lobbying with various civil societies of Assam to broaden their counter blockade to Nagaland State too. The Governments listen and pays heed only to guns and such severe forms of agitation. Remember, the ANSAM blockade is not against the Meiteis but against the Manipur Government and all tribals including Nagas are also feeling the pinch of the blockade. But the counter blockade by Meities is strictly and clearly against the Nagas ? There is no difference between the Meiteis and the Manipur state government, they are one. Who is communal and whose hegemony is in operation ? It is out there like an open book for all to see ?
