Junta to mull “Status” for Myanmar Nagas Al Ngullie Morung Express News

In this image released to the media, the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio seen with the Ambassador of Myanmar to India U-Kyi Thein whom the CM called on during his visit to Delhi. Also seen are Members of Parliament from Nagaland, CM Chang and Khekiho Zhimomi and Nagaland’s Planning Minister TR Zeliang.

The Ambassador of Myanmar to India has assured Nagaland government leaders to mull with the Junta, the matter of ‘recognizing’ Myanmar Nagas with a “status.” Toward this involvement, it has come to light that efforts have been assured to facilitating the Nagaland government to meet with Myanmar’s government.
The crucial subject of designating the Nagas of Myanmar either a political or administrative status of their own, in Myanmar State, was broached with the Ambassador of Myanmar to India in New Delhi today. Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio has met with the Ambassador of Myanmar to India, U-Kyi Thein. Discussions were held over the issue of granting a status of recognition to Myanmar-Nagas within the political or administrative framework of the predominantly Buddhist nation.
With Chief Minister Rio during the meeting with Thein, were Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Khekiho Zhimomi, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament-elect CM Chang and Nagaland Minister for Planning TR Zeliang. The Myanmar ambassador has assured the chief minister that the matter would be communicated to the Myanmar government at the earliest. Significantly, a proposition surfaced during the meeting that initiatives would be undertaken to facilitate the Government of Nagaland to meet with Yangon’s leaders. Highly-placed sources in the state government informed that imminent efforts to enable the Nagaland state government leaders to visit Myanmar’s government were assured to Rio by Ambassador Thein.
Thein assured Rio that the state’s government ‘request’ would be communicated to the Myanmar government. When contacted, Minister for Planning TR Zeliang confirmed the point of discussions with U-Kyi Thein. The ambassador was ‘very positive’ to the request that the Nagas in Myanmar should be recognized, the minister said. Zeliang said the same matter was broached before Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who was requested to “speak with the Junta” for a status of recognition for the Myanmar Nagas.
“He said this is the right approach,” said Zeliang quoting the prime minister. What steps the Prime Minister assured to take pertinent to Rio’s ‘request’ for recognition, was not commented on at this stage.
Along similar lines, Rio and Thein are also said to have discussed “development from both sides” – that the two government’s respective border regions (where Myanmar Nagas are concentrated) should be developed. The issues of poor healthcare and non-existent educational infrastructures and facilities as well as lack of roads and communication networks in the concentrated community’s regions were also broached. ‘The people (Nagas in Burma) are neglected…He will talk to the Burma government sometime soon’, said Zeliang referring to Thein’s assurance to take up the matter with the Junta.Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Khekiho Zhimomi also said Thein was told that the Nagas in Myanmar must be recognized, for in their selves being an ethnic group. Interacting with The Morung Express, the MP said Thein was “concerned” at the plight of the minority Nagas and would engage with his government for a solution. On the query of what the very nature of the “status” as requested would be, Zhimomi said the ‘recognition’ should be one that would enable “development” for the ethnic Naga minority. “…one which will automatically promote their welfare” Zhimomi explained.
No other specific point of discussion was had with Thein, it was informed.
Nurse from Tml found murdered in New Delhi
The Imphal Free Press

Imphal, May 22: A 25-year old unmarried staff nurse of Vinayak Hospital, Derawal Nagar Modern Town in Delhi was found killed suspiciously on May 15 at the Ridge area, Rajpur Civil Lines. Due to late verification, the nurse’s dead body was disposed off by the concerned authority on May 19 at Delhi.

The victim was identified as Langailiu Kamei, 25, daughter of Chun Thuilung (Athui) Kamei of Khumji Part II (Lukhambi) near Longmai (Noney) in Tamenglong district who was presently residing at Gandhi Vihar in Delhi.

Zeliangrong organisations including the Zeliangrong Union (Assam,Manipur,Nagaland), Zeliangrong Culture Council, Zeliangrong Youth Front (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland), Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur and Kabui Mothers’ Association today formed a Joint Action Committee at Namdulong Youth Club in Imphal and took several resolutions asking the Delhi Police to book and punish the culprits under the law and also urging the government of Manipur to put pressure on the Centre on the matter of killing of people from the NE region specially students.

The JAC has questioned why proper security was not being provided to the north eastern people. Languilu Kamei was not the first case as many innocent girls and boys had been killed, it said.

The JAC further appealed to the people to protest for security and compensation for the deceased’s family as she was the only bread earner of her family.

Speaking at a media conference, JAC spokesperson Dr. S Xavier Kamei said that information on the death came only on May 21 although she had been missing since May 13.

The spokesperson further disclosed that Langailu was found on May 15 at Ridge area in Delhi with a knife mark on her throat.

Unfortunately, due to the late information from Delhi, the Zeliangrong people were not present on time in Delhi and the body was disposed off as unclaimed body.

However, the her final rites will be performed according to customary norms tomorrow at her birth place.

In the meantime, the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur has demanded compensation for the bereaved family and also security for the people from the north east staying in New Delhi.

The Zeliangrong Students’ Union strongly condemned the brutal murder of Langailiu and urged upon the concerned authority to book the culprits immediately in order to create an environment where the Zeliangrong people in particular, and people from the north east in general, could stay away from fear and insecurity.
Rio’s unconditional support to UPA is “Absurd”: NPCC

Dimapur, May 23 (MExN): The NPCC today reaffirmed the earlier statement of its vice president Zachilo on the recent election in Nagaland and the “double standard” role of chief minister Neiphiu Rio in “offering unconditional support” to the Congress led UPA at the centre.
Nillo Rengma, vice president of NPCC in a statement today said the sudden u-turn by chief minister Neiphiu Rio is completely “absurd”.
Rengma in the press note reminded that not long back the chief minister was vehemently against the Congress while campaigning for NPF in the run up to the elections. Rengma in the press note pointed out that: On March 28, at the NPF rally in Tuensang, Rio was quoted by a local daily as saying “Nagas should no longer allow Congress to rule the country,” further stating that “its (congress) repressive policies have brought untold suffering to the people during their 50 years in power”.
Again on April 1 at the NPF rally in Wokha, Rengma quoted the chief minister as saying “no high command for Nagas” which Rio had remarked making reference to the rejection of Congress rule. Rengma further referring to a local daily (April 2) noted that Rio went on to say that “Nagas are mature enough to run their own affairs without any interference from the Center or high Command.”
The biggest contradiction of Rio was however is what he had said on April 5 in a rally at Dimapur. Rio called the Congress party the “number one enemy for NPF in Nagaland”. Further Rio at the same rally urged the people “not to be a tool in the hands of the Congress”.
The NPCC ridiculed the prediction of PA Sangma and Neiphiu Rio for a ‘congress downfall’ made at joint rally at Jalukie. Rengma in the press note reminded that the duo of Sangma and Rio supposedly “good friends” with “one mind and one objective” as projected at the April 6 NPF rally, had said that there “will be no Congress Ministry in Delhi”.
Rengma noted that by jointly campaigning with PA Sangma who opposes the Congress, Rio had already entered into partnership with the NCP leader. The NPCC therefore expressed surprise that chief minister Rio is now talking about “partnership, understanding, and mutual respect with Congress party” in New Delhi.
The NPCC emphatically asserted that the All India Congress party is “one body and one soul, be it in Delhi or Nagaland”, and therefore the sudden change of stand by Rio who had earlier called the Congress the “number one enemy” now wanting “partnership, understanding, and mutual respect with Congress party” does not “carry any water”.

The recent happenings in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Nagaland Nagaland Page
The surprising and unexpected success of the Indira Congress in the recent Elections against all the civilized Exit-poll predictions, against all the educated Guesses of Elite people and against all the prophesies of the political Pundits; -the Communist-Rebel-become-Prime Minister of Nepals undemocratic dismissal of his Commander-in-Chief of the Army leading to his own demise; -the unexciting forgone conclusion of the sweeping NPF victory in Nagaland and the inevitable end of the dreaded Author of the worlds most feared Suicide terrorist Mr. Prabhakaran in the marshes of Northern Srilanka; all indicate the importance of Humility at Heart and Democratic Actions in the ultimate success or failure of Political Groups.
Firstly, the great BJPs Prime Minister-in-waiting Leader personally attacking the humility of the Leader of the Congress as weak Prime Ministerial material but the Leader himself showing little courage in the protection of the Minority and the Down Trodden from mob violence of Religious or Community fanatics in India, particularly if the mob is from close and dear ones of his Party, is meaningful It is very significant that Mr. Sorabjee, one of the most luminous legal Minds of India openly in a televised discussion stated it is very revealing there is no instance of the BJP ever come to the Protection of the Minority in India.
In Nepal no one doubted the sincerity of the Communist Rebel Leader for his deep concern for the poor village-dwellers; the School Teacher Communist-Rebel-become-Prime Minister of Nepal has been the main architect in the abolition of 200 years History of despotic Monarchy in Nepal; but, on gaining Power, perhaps lacking in Democratic Culture he turned despotic the very trait he risked his own life to eliminate in the Himalayan mountain Kingdom- and undemocratically discharged his Commander in Chief of the Army leading ultimately to his own demise and thus ushering political unrest in the country.
In Nagaland, the NPF success was an unexciting forgone conclusion everybody expected, what was not expected was the degree of the success, the brilliant complete sweeping of all the Seats in and from the State shows, whether one supports him or not, that the young Chief Ministers untimely balding head must contain some political Leadership materials. He has done brilliantly.
One redeeming feature of the Nagalands result; at least to this Scribbler and whether one is happy or not at the result, is that it shows perhaps unintentionally Nagaland is not yet just any blind follower of mainstream India politics; though the subsequent the Lock-stock and Barrel of all the many Parties in the State merging with NPF after the latters sweeping Election result, and the Partys UN-CONTIONAL SUPPORT to the UPA in Delhi, is not a sign of healthy mature Politics. And both the MPs of Nagaland have in common strikingly long, beautiful curved-up Mustache characteristic of unlettered rural 12-bore Gun toting, rope-Cot reclining Land Lords of rural UP-Bihar, both are however famous, one to the CBI and the other to the attractive girls in Nagaland! However, of the so-called 7-Sister States of the North East, Nagaland is still not completely a She-State. It still has some political Independence, this the State must maintain in view of the special Constitutional provision for Nagaland.
Lastly, perhaps more importantly to Nagas, is the pitiable end of the once seemingly invincible Prabhakaran -the Guru of suicide Bomb in the world, in the lagoons of Mullaitavu at the hand of dutiful unknown SriLankan soldiers bullets: this has a lesson for all who believe in the barrel of the Gun for political Supremacy. And that is not the end of the story; democratic people have now raised the subject of INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL to punish Crimes against Humanity in SriLanka. Recently one 90 year old man, shuffling and hardly able to walk; was arrested in America to be transported to Germany charged with Crime against Humanity committed during the World War II some 65 years ago.

Nagaland BJP plans revamp
A Staff Reporter | EMN
DIMAPUR, MAY 23: Against the backdrop of the party’s legislators and leaders merging with the regional NPF, the State unit BJP is all set to revamp its setup with the announcement of ad-hoc office bearers on Sunday.
Disclosing this to media persons at Hotel Tragopan, BJP Northeast in-charge P Chandra Shekhar said the party would announce on Sunday ad-hoc officials who would be in charge for a period of three months till election of full fledged office bearers in June. The central BJP has scheduled the reshuffling of party officials in different states across the country in the month of June.
Shekhar expressed confidence that the BJP does not lack leadership in Nagaland and that there will be enough candidates who can be entrusted with party functioning and also emerge as future legislators. He stated that the party was formalising all necessary details for announcement of the ad-hoc office bearers for the state of Nagaland.
Commenting on the recent development of the party’s top officials’ decision to merge with the ruling NPF party, Chandra Shekhar described it as ‘unconstitutional’ since it was not intimated to the central leadership. Decrying the step, he also maintained that they do not have the authority to take such decisions. And while he did not name any individual, he attributed their desertion to ‘personal interests’.
On the probable candidate to lead the party in the State, Shekhar said preference would be based on persons who have been consistent and loyal to the party.

May 22: Twelve persons were injured when suspected militants of the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Gorlosa) attacked yet another goods train in North Cachar Hills district of Assam at 1pm today.
A high-level security review meeting, held in Dispur around the same time, decided to intensify joint operations against those fomenting trouble in the hill district.
Police sources said the Badarpur-bound train from Lumding, which had chugged just 25km to Dijaobra under Langting police station, came under attack between Langting and Dijaobra stations.
Two railway personnel, including an assistant engineer, three jawans of the India Reserve Battalion and seven constables of Assam Police battalion were injured in the attack.
A source in Lumding Railway Hospital said the three IRB jawans, who suffered critical bullet injuries, were shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The others were injured while trying to escape. “Most of them fell down and hurt themselves,” he added.
The sources said the assailants, numbering about eight, were crouching on a hill saddle that divided the rail track, awaiting the arrival of the train.
They, however, fled when “the security personnel inside the heavily fortified goods train retaliated strongly,” a Maibong police source said. It could not be gathered if any rebel was injured.
The train was later brought to Mandardisa station (before Dijaobra station, near Lumding) from where the incident was reported to Lumding over phone.
The DHD (J) has stepped up its attacks in the district, hitting goods train services.
Army and BSF reinforcements were rushed to the attack site today to join a combing drive for the assailants.
The NC Hills Autonomous Council appealed to the DHD (J) to stop the attacks on trains. It also urged the state and Union governments to take steps to bring the militant group to the negotiating table.
The high-level meeting in Dispur, chaired by chief secretary P.C. Sharma, discussed ways to restore peace in the troubled district. It was attended by director-general of police G.M. Srivastava, GOC, 4 Corps, Lt Gen. K.T. Parnaik, and senior officials. Sharma told this correspondent that the government was taking all possible measures to tackle the situation and restore peace in the district.
Sources in Dispur said the nearly three-hour-long meeting decided to deploy more security personnel in the district, intensify joint operations and share intelligence promptly among security agencies.
It unanimously decided to keep the rail services going despite the attacks. NF Railway promised to extend all support provided the security of its personnel was ensured.
The chief executive member of NC Hills Autonomous Council, Mohit Hojai, today held a news meet in Haflong on the law and order in the district. The police have been looking for him in connection with the recovery of Rs 1 crore in Guwahati last month from two persons who claimed to have brought the cash from his residence there for the purchase of arms for the DHD (J).
