Beyond Twilight
A thriller with a backlash of policies
- by Frans Welman
|
Beyond Twilight a thriller so fiction, but is based on reality. It is an unusual thriller for it has the relatively unknown Naga Peoples as the main subject but also the post colonial responsibility and accountability of nations.
Summary:
Beyond twilight begins with a carefully planned and carried out assassination. The police in Manila, where the murder takes place in broad daylight, soon find out that the murdered person is an important figure of a nation they never heard of, Nagaland. This sets them off and they begin to investigate to find the culprits have flown out of the country, but for one. Meanwhile in the Netherlands a covert operative meets a Naga lady. This Naga lady seeks support for the growing drug addiction in her country. The covert operative and the Naga lady fall in love. They met when at leisure so not in function and neither of them knows what they actually do. Inspired by her the covert operative decides to go on a journey to meet her in Nagaland. The plotter pulls the strings and monitors the assassins, who have fled to a third country. The plotter, out of spite for what he represents neglected to do, plots to give up the assassins so that the attention is paid to the Indo Naga war. The Manila police informs the Dutch police for the assassins apparently are of Dutch and English origin. When it is know it is a Naga leader who has been assassinated, the Nagas think the Indian Government has ordered the killing and the people come close to an uprising. When the Manila Police just in time find out the assassins were of quite other nationalities in the nick of time a potentially bloody uprising can be averted, but the secret services of India are purged from within.
The chase is on to find who is behind all this and as not even the assassins know but that the plotter has something on them so they could not refuse his offer when caught in Rio de Janeiro, things are clouded again.
When the plotter finds that the exposure of the Naga problem does not gain momentum enough, he decides to become drastic. He flies to Amsterdam and arranges with the UNPO office to surrender himself before a world audience of journalists, but with the understanding that his actual motivation is highlighted. This press conference from the UNPO office creates havoc in international circles and the secret service of the Netherlands finds itself in a predicament. It has the plotter in custody but where should he be brought to justice? Many countries are already fighting over him to do that. The Naga lady has the answer, an answer which will attract maximum attention and will take Nagaland Out of Isolation in the process. She suggests the plotter to be tried before a customary law court in Nagaland itself. Since refusing to allow this would give India and other prospective countries a bad image, the plotter is brought to Nagaland and the international press follows in full force.
The apotheosis of the book begins when the trial is under and the helper of the assassin is finally caught in Manila.
He has a story to tell and his story is a revelation all by itself.
Beyond Twilight the thriller has; suspense, background, erotica, unsuspected moves, reality in fiction, impact and it shows what could have been on what is. Only the characters and the impact of the assassination are fiction. All parties involved in the Indo-Naga long time conflict are playing their part. The question is do they play fair and square or do they cheat and deceit? Are they genuine in their quests, or do they use others for their own interest?
What happens Beyond Twilight and what effect does it have in daylight?
